What is a Dedicated IP address? Do I need one?

What is a Dedicated IP address?

A dedicated IP address is an IP address which is reserved just for your website. Unless you have a Virtual Private Server (VPS) with us, your website will be hosted on a shared server, and will have a shared IP address by default.

Why would I need a Dedicated IP address?

The only reason you'd need a dedicated IP address with a shared hosting account would be if you have a SSL Certificate. If you do not have a SSL certificate for HTTPS traffic, you will not need a dedicated IP address.

How much does a Dedicated IP address cost?

At time of writing, we charge $2.50 per dedicated IP address, per month.

Is having a Dedicated IP address critical for achieving great Google rankings?

This is a myth - a dedicated IP address makes no difference to your search engine ranking.

" Google handles virtually hosted domains and their links just the same as domains on unique IP addresses. If your ISP does virtual hosting correctly, you’ll never see a difference between the two cases. We do see a small percentage of ISPs every month that misconfigure their virtual hosting, which might account for this persistent misperception."
