What is the difference between MySQL and PostgreSQL?
Posted by Diego Cousinet on 21 February 2011 11:36 AM

On a very basic level, MySQL can be thought of as being a "popular, easy to use and fast" database, while PostgreSQL is more "feature-rich and standards-compliant".

Both can easily be used as the back end of web applications, and have fairly similar syntax. Due to MySQL's popularity it is usually easier to find support documentation for new users.
