Awstats vs Traffic data from our overuse system
Posted by Adrian Grant on 22 January 2015 04:27 PM

As per our announcement on 24/10/2014, we have started charging customers for traffic and storage over use. We annouced this change as per the knowledgebase article below:

https://support.webhost.co.nz/index.php?/webdrive/Knowledgebase/Article/View/842/64/web-drive-shared-hosting-overuse---knowledge-base-qa

We have found that the display of the traffic data shown by the AWStats ( our statistics program which measures traffic, hits, views per site ) may be confusing and this article aims to address it.

As per the following screenshot, AWStats splits the traffic data between the Viewed and non viewed traffic. AWStats's explanation on non viewed traffic is "Not viewed traffic includes traffic generated by robots, worms, or replies with special HTTP status codes."

Traffic

In the above case, the total traffic used by the site is Viewed Traffic (14.46GB) + Not Viewed Traffic (6.20 GB) = 20.66 GB.  As per our plans, this site is overusing traffic by 10.66 GB and this is the data that our script sees.

More information on the amount of traffic used by the robots and worms is shown on the same AWStats page by scrolling down on that page. Screenshot below:
